We’re delighted to be part of the new NHS Pharmacy First service, making it easier and quicker for you to get the healthcare you need. This exciting new service allows our highly trained pharmacists to assess and treat you for seven common conditions directly in our pharmacy, often saving you a trip to the GP.


What is Pharmacy First?

Pharmacy First is a new NHS service that empowers your local pharmacist to do even more for your health. For specific everyday illnesses, you no longer need to wait for a GP appointment. Our experienced pharmacists can provide expert advice, offer self-care guidance, and, where appropriate, supply prescription-only medicines (including antibiotics or antivirals) for the conditions listed below.

What conditions can Pharmacy First help with?

Cystitis (UTIs)

Our pharmacists can offer advice & treatment for cystitis, including prescription treatment for women aged 16-64, where appropriate. For catheter wearers please contact your GP if you suspect you have a UTI.

Earache

Our pharmacists can provide advice & treatment for earache, which includes prescription treatment for individuals ages 1-17 years where appropriate.

Sinusitus

Our pharmacists can offer advice & treatment for sinusitus, including prescription treatment, for individuals 12 years & over, where appropriate.

Sore Throats

Our pharmacists can offer advice & treatment for sore throats, including prescription treatment for individuals aged 5 years & over where appropriate.

Shingles

Our pharmacists can offer advice & treatment for shingles, including prescription treatment for individuals aged 18 & over, where appropriate.

Infected bites & stings

Our pharmacists can offer advice & treatment for bites & stings, which includes prescription treatment for individuals aged 1 year & over, where appropriate.

Impetigo

Our pharmacists can offer advice & treatment for impetigo, which includes prescription treatment for individuals aged 1 & over where appropriate.

How Pharmacy First Works:

Patients can either walk into a participating pharmacy and ask for a consultation, or they may be referred by NHS 111, their GP practice, or other urgent care providers.

A pharmacist, who has undergone additional training, will conduct a confidential consultation in a private room.

The pharmacist will assess the condition and recommend the best course of action. This could include:

After the consultation, the pharmacy will send a notification to the patient's GP on the same day or the following working day.

The consultation itself is an NHS service and is free of charge. Normal prescription charges apply for any medicines supplied, but exemptions still apply (e.g., if you normally get free prescriptions).

Prescribing and supplying appropriate medicines (including antibiotics or antivirals where clinically necessary) under defined clinical pathways.

Referring the patient to another healthcare professional (like a GP or A&E) if their condition is more serious or requires further investigation.
